Chapter thirteen

Midnight Liaisons

Luke was surprised to see me.

“Oh,” he said upon seeing me there holding the cheap bottle of wine I’d picked up from the petrol station. For a moment I wondered if I’d judged the situation wrong, that those inner voices that were urging caution were perhaps right.

But his face instantly brightened.

“Sorry, it’s late. Been at the hospital all day.”

“I thought I’d scared you away,” he said with a smirk.

Of course, I thought. I’d woken this morning and left without saying a word. I’d meant to send him a text, but the day just ran away with me.

“Yeah,” I said awkwardly. “I woke this morning and could feel the tracking spell fading, so I had to take off.”

“Did you find her?”

I thought back to my conversations with Ruby and Zara, of how The Assembly had been hunting Zara down. As much as I didn’t want to believe that Luke was behind the elemental spirit wrecking havoc in Castle Cove, I couldn’t be sure. I figured that if Luke taught me some arcane skills, it was likely that he wasn’t behind this.

Even so, an inner voice other than my wolf was urging caution.

“No, I didn’t,” I responded, only then realizing that it was impossible for the spell to fail.

“I mean,” I quickly corrected. “I found her just as the spell faded, but she was able to escape.”

“Mmm,” Luke mused. “Next time, wake me and we’ll go together. You still got the purse.”

“Lost it in the chase,” I said, grimacing. “But I brought wine.”

Luke didn’t seem impressed, and I couldn’t be sure if that was with me or at the thought of Zara escaping. But after considering the situation, Luke’s neutral expression of concern turned into a smile.

“A worthy comprise,” he said. “I’m glad to see you, Oli. Come in.”

I stepped into his hallway, Luke leaning past me to close the door behind me, his head drawing close to mine.

The door latch caught, and he was suddenly pressed up against me, his lips at mine, his hands at my shirt buttons.

My hand slipped down and into his sweatpants, gripping his cock.

“Someone’s keen,” Luke said with his trademark smirk.

“Blame the wolf,” I said. “They have unquenchable thirst.”

“So do wizards,” Luke purred, as my tongue pushed into his mouth.

I wasn’t sure why I’d come. But I thought back to Dr. Rane’s words. I had a right to feel happy, and after such a miserable day, I needed to get away.

We twisted round, Luke being pushed against the hall wall.

“My,” Luke said, coming up for air. “Someone’s wolf is very much in charge tonight.”

“You have no idea,” I whispered in his ear, causing his cock to jolt in my hand. “I’ve had a shit day and need to let off a little steam.”

Of course, he could be all behind this. I could be holding Barthol’s killer’s cock in my hand right now. I didn’t want it to be true. And it wasn’t like I’d historically shown good character judgement.

Please, I thought, as Luke kissed at my neck and rubbed himself up against me.
